Mario and Luigi ... as you've never seen them before.

Have we learned nothing from the past?

Look people, if there's one thing the craptacular "Super Mario Bros." feature film of 1993 proved, it's that video game icons Mario and Luigi do not belong on the silver screen.

Or...do they?

Is it possible the famed Italian plumbing duo simply hasn't been given a fair cinematic shake? Was their first feature film just a horrible, horrible fluke?

While the awfulness of that film remains fresh in many of our minds, directors Nathan Kitada and Aaron T. Umetani at Country Club Pictures have dared to imagine an all new movie starring an all new Mario and Luigi. And you know...perhaps they're onto something.

Take a look at the trailer for the film they call "The Brothers Mario" — a trailer created using "Grand Theft Auto IV." You'll never think of the words "Itsa me, Mario" the same way.

As one YouTube commenter points out: "This makes sense because Mario is Italian."

But if this dark take on Nintendo's lovable duo isn't quite your speed, there's also "Super Mario Bros. The Musical" to look forward to. (Thank you, Brentalfloss, thank you).

Meanwhile, since everyone seems to have Nintendo's iconic characters on the mind today, check out the new Dorkly Bits — an important reminder about just how dangerous playing "Mario Kart" can be.
